Former Premier League star Darren Bent believes Everton should sanction the sale of Gylfi Sigurdsson during the next transfer window in order to land a younger replacement. The Icelandic footballer has been a valuable performer over the years but he has struggled for form this term with just one goal and two assists from 26 league games.
As a result, there has been doubts regarding his future with the Toffees and Bent believes it could be time to part ways with Sigurdsson to sign a player of Jack Grealish’s calibre, he told: “I think it might be time for them (to sell). If they’re going after someone like a Grealish or a Jesse Lingard. We know Sigurdsson’s got ability, we know how good he is, he’s brilliant – technically, he’s very, very good.
“For whatever reason, he hasn’t been able to put it all together, he just hasn’t done it and we don’t know why. I think Ancelotti will help but if they can go and get someone like a Grealish, I’d probably cut the losses and go from there. He is a top player and he has got a lot of ability but, if you don’t get it consistently enough from him, there’s no point keeping him there.”
Grealish has been a solid contributor for Aston Villa since their return to the Premier League and he has amassed seven goals and six assists. The 24-year-old has largely played as the left-sided winger for the Villains but he has personally stated that he would prefer to feature in the centre of the park or as an attacking midfielder.
At present, Grealish is said to be valued at more than £60m but the valuation should come down, should the Villains get relegated from the Premier League. The Toffees are planning a summer spending spree despite the coronavirus pandemic and they have been linked with high-profile names such as Philippe Coutinho and James Rodriguez.
